Apple unveiled the white iPhone 4 back in June last year. Although this variant of the iPhone found terrific popularity among customers even before launch, the device never made it to the stores due to, what Apple calls, a manufacturing glitch. However, it looks like the company may have finally fixed the issues and a white iPhone 4 may soon be on its way. Just days after details about a white iPhone 4 was revealed from the back-end databases of Vodafone Germany and Best Buy in the United States, comes one more report – this time from AT&T.
The AT&T Online Account Management system now appears to include two entries that read, “iPhone 4 – 16GB White” and “iPhone 4 – 32GB White”. While the entries do not contain details about the launch date, we do expect it to happen in the next few weeks considering that Apple may want to have this new iPhone variant in the market for at least a couple of months before the next generation iPhone launches – presumably in June of this year.
Just a day after we had written about a possible launch of white iPhone 4 in the next few weeks comes a report that Best Buy could be prepping for the launch of the white iPhone 4. According to leaked screenshots of the Best Buy back-end inventory system, the white iPhone 4 is scheduled to launch on February 27, 2011. This is consistent with earlier rumors about a Spring 2011 launch and yesterday’s story about a similar listing discovered on Vodafone Germany’s inventory database.
Like with the Vodafone Germany story, the Best Buy system too contains two separate SKUs for the 16GB and 32GB variants. In addition to this, the system also contains features description consistent with what was available on the Apple website in June last year when the white iPhone 4 was first unveiled.
February 27 turns out to be a Sunday and we are not sure if Apple would want to move away from its traditional launch days of Thursday and Friday. What do you think?
Has Apple finally managed to work out the kinks that it had been facing with the white iPhone 4? Last month we wrote about an obscure footer message on Apple Store posters that hinted at a possible spring launch for the white iPhone 4. It now looks like these speculations could turn out right.
A Vodafone Germany employee has now leaked a screenshot of a back-end inventory system that contains listings for the 16GB and 32GB variants of a weiß (white) iPhone 4. No more information is available. But considering that the Verizon iPhone 4 is soon on its way, we expect a CDMA iPhone variant to make its way into other parts of the world by spring – with high chances for Apple to launch both a CDMA and a white iPhone model at the same time.
What this means is that we might also expect Apple to bring the white iPhone 4 to its primary market in the United States earlier than that. Can we expect a February launch of the white iPhone in the US? We will have to wait and watch.
The white iPhone 4 drama has dragged on for a long time. Steve Jobs unveiled it like it was the next big thing and only weeks later customers waiting for the white variant were disappointed to hear that the model was being delayed. So much delayed that reports started going around that Apple had decided to kill the project. The delay was being attributed to light leaks, rough and bent frames resulting from flawed manufacturing practice, etc.
Whatever the delay was due to, it is now becoming clear that the white iPhone 4 may not launch anytime soon. Signages that are being put up by Apple on their Stores across the United States have pointed out that the white variant will be made available in “Spring 2011“. If our speculation is true, then this could mean a month or two before iPhone 5 launches in June next year.
That will give Apple an opportunity to boost its sale numbers for the quarter; one that is normally low ahead of the next gen iPhone launch.
In the three years that the iPhone has existed, there must have been several dozen Verizon iPhone rumors. Of course, this time, the likelihood for such a phone to launch are pretty bright. We hear AT&T is no longer promoting the iPhone as aggressively as it once used to. But recently leaked pictures do not seem to be the real deal.
For starters, here is the picture of a white Verizon iPhone 4 that has been making the rounds.
There are some interesting revelations. First, you can see a modified antenna band on this new iPhone that could possibly solve the Antennagate issue. Second, you will see that there is no slot for a SIM card making it a possible CDMA iPhone (and not GSM that need SIM cards). Thirdly, you can make out the Verizon logo on top.
But what makes me doubt the genuineness of this image leak is the color. From all that we have heard until now, Apple has been having a tough time bringing the white iPhone 4 to the market. This is primarily because of issues with light leakage and glass panels that do not seem to be going along well with the white color. There are speculations that Apple could actually be doing away with a white iPhone 4 and instead be looking at one such model for the next generation model launching mid-next year. Given these circumstances, a white iPhone on Verizon looks pretty unlikely – very much because this CDMA variant could be launching very shortly. What do you think?
