Tablet PCs running on Ubuntu OS may be available by the first quarter of next year. This was announced by Canonical Vice President of OEM services, Chris Kenyon. He has said that the tablet version of Ubuntu will be light-weighted and will also come with a simplified and touch-friendly UI.
This will be Canonical’s first foray into the tablet space. The company has so far created OS platforms for servers, desktops, notebooks and netbooks. Kenyon has also applauded the Apple team for achieving what they did with the iPad and says he is bullish on the prospects for his company with respect to the tablet market.
With a Q1 2011 launch, Ubuntu may probably be one of the very late entrants to the tablet space. A lot of Android, Windows and Chrome OS based tablets are expected to be launched later this year. Also, other mobile platforms like Palm (now HP) and RIM are learned to be working towards launching their own tablets.[via Network World]
