It was only last month that Samsung had announced the world’s smallest 1080p camera – a 4.5mm high 2.1 megapixel CMOS chip. Now, Omnivision Technologies has announced that release of a camera that is much smaller – 1 millimeter to be precise.
The new OV2720 CMOS image sensor measures 3.5 mm and can record “video conference quality” HD videos and is expected to become available with upcoming models of notebooks.
Mass production of the image sensors is set to begin in June 2010. In-Stat analyst Brian O’Rourke says,
“In 2010, we expect over 70 percent of mobile PCs to ship with embedded cameras, and the availability of sensors such as OmniVision’s OV2720 will make high definition video conferencing more popular in the notebook and netbook PC segments.”[via SlashGear]
