Now Jailbreak Sony PlayStation 3 With iPhone or iPod Touch

Remember our article on jailbreaking your Sony PlayStation 3 with your Palm Pre, Nokia N900 or Android handsets? Now, add iPhone to the list. A hacker named NTAuthority has now created a jailbreak solution for users to jailbreak their PS3 with their iDevice. But before you get all excited, you must know that not all iOS devices are supported. The hack is at present possible only with the first generation models of iPod Touch, iPhone 2G/3G. Not even 3GS. They need to be jailbroken. Also, you will need VMWare Player, Ubuntu 10.04, OpeniBoot, WinSCP and OpenSSH. Check out the video of the jailbreak below. For the complete tutorial, click away.

You may not need this, but it’s necessary to make it clear that jailbreaking may void your warranty and also get you banned from the PSN. So the risk is on you.

Jailbreak Your iPhone/iPad Permanently With New SHAtter Exploit

Getting tired of having to jailbreak your iDevice everytime a new iOS update comes about? A new bootrom exploit has been discovered that will help you keep your device jailbroken for life and will work on the iPhone, iPod Touch as well as the iPad – including the most recent versions. The reason is because this exploit is related to the hardware and hence Apple cannot fix the issue with their software updates.

The jailbreaking application is still not publicly available and the iPhone Dev team and Chronic Dev team are learned to be still working on using the exploit to develop a jailbreak tool. While this is definitely something to be excited about, do note that this jailbreak is tethered. This would imply, users will have to tether their iPhone or iPad to a computer while rebooting in order to keep the device jailbroken. Otherwise, it’s only the risks with warranty and performance that you have to be aware of, which I am sure, you may have already mulled over.

iOS 4 Draining Battery On iPod Touch – Here Are Some Fixes

A massive thread up on the Apple support forum has been up and running since June this year and presently has close to a thousand posts from people who have been noticing severe battery drain on their iPod Touch since it was upgraded to the iOS 4 operating system. Since then, Apple has released newer versions with a major iOS 4.1 release expected this week. However, the problems that these users have been facing are unlikely to be resolved anytime soon.

There are some observations that the problem could stem from the fact that Apple has chosen to keep power guzzling features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth on while the iPod is asleep.  If you are facing the same issue, you could use one of the following resolution procedures.

  • Navigate to Settings and turn on Airplane mode before retiring for the night. This feature will automatically disable features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth so that you may save battery while the iPod Touch is not in use.
  • Deactivate Push notifications and alerts. Some users have seen results with just this
  • Navigate to Settings -> Mail,Contacts,Calendar -> Fetch New Data. Set the feature to ‘Manually
  • Attempt a system restore

Many users have seen an improvement in battery performance using one of the above fixes. Do try them and let us know if they work.

Where Is The Antenna Band On iPod Touch 4?

The iPod Touch doesn’t have to make phone calls, but it surely has to have its antenna bands for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. After all the brouhaha over the iPhone 4 and its antenna, one must surely be thinking if Apple has got the antenna placement right in its latest product. Well, for now, we will have to wait and watch how the antenna on iPod Touch works.

This is because, unlike the iPhone 4 which has an externally placed antenna band, the new iPod Touch has the antennas placed in a conventional internal location. While that should offer the much needed relief, the problem here is with the back casing. Unlike earlier models that had a rubber slot to house the internal antenna, the latest iPod Touch unit comes with an all-steel casing that could technically cause interference. However, the FCC filing claims that the antenna is provided with sufficient insulators that should prevent any sort of  interference.

Any other day, this explanation would have been sufficient. But I don’t think that holds true any longer. So wait until the iPod Touch units are actually out before you can call upon a judgement.

The YouTube terms of service prohibits users from downloading videos from the website. This was a primary reason behind Apple banning the free iPhone app MiTube not so long ago. Now if you are still looking for an alternative, here is an app that will enable the process for you. The YourTube app is available on Cydia for jailbroken users and provides a way to download HD YouTube videos to the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Besides this, the application also lets you import these downloaded videos to your iPod app.

Of course, since this is a jailbreak app, non-jailbroken iPhone users cannot access the application. You can of course use one of our jailbreaking guides to get started (unless you have not updated to the latest OS). But do remember that jailbreaking can void your warranty.

The latest update of YourTube is compatible with iPhone 4 and iOS 4 as well and is available at a price of $5. Already own this iPhone app? Then you are eligible for an upgrade at just $1 if you had purchased the older app before July 1.

Is iPod Touch 4 An iPhone 4 Without A Phone?

The newly unveiled iPod Touch 4 brings a lot of new features that Apple has borrowed from the iPhone 4 that was launched earlier this year. Most notably, the device is equipped with the same retina display, an Apple A4 chip and two cameras – one on the front and one on the rear.

Does it make the new iPod Touch an iPhone without a voice plan? As GigaOm points out, there are some pretty important functionalities that the upcoming version of iPod Touch will be missing that is hard to call the features on this device close to the iPhone 4.

Firstly, iPod Touch 4 will not carry a GPS chip. What that means is that users will not be able to use the hugely popular location based services when they are outside Wi-Fi coverage areas. Presently, iPod Touch users can only use LBS applications using the location data pulled from the Wi-Fi networks. Of course, even with a GPS chip on, this device cannot do much outside a Wi-Fi network primarily because the iPod Touch also misses 3G connectivity.

Following the successful launch of the iPad 3G model, it was widely speculated that the iPod Touch model too could come with a 3G data plan. But that was not to be.

Lastly, the rear-facing camera on the iPod Touch does not compare to the specs of even the older iPhone models. This is because the camera renders images at 960 x 720 pixel resolution which is approximately 0.7-Megapixels. That is completely unusable for capturing any picture worth, well, capturing.

What are your thoughts? Are you buying a new iPod Touch?

New iPod Touch Parts Leaked In Demo Video

By now, the new iPod Touch has been leaked a several dozen times so I won’t bother to take you through that “interesting rumor” that this fourth generation device could possibly come with a front facing camera that will support FaceTime video calling. By all means, that looks a certainty considering that Apple was supposed to get the camera in the last generation model itself and with the company desperately trying to get their new video calling feature proliferate much better among users are most likely to bring camera to iPod Touch 4G.

Anyway, there is a new video demo doing the rounds in the blogosphere that shows a front LCD panel of the new iPod Touch revealing a slot for a camera in all its glory. Check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Many iPod Touch users have been complaining on the Apple support forums about a new iOS 4 related issue – the time on their device appears to be randomly changing. Most of the users who have been experiencing this issue have been noticing it only after their device was upgraded to the latest iOS 4 platform. One user writes,

“Similar issue here with my 2nd gen iPod Touch, after upgradeing to iOS4. My time keeps “resetting” to exactly 1 hour 13 minutes behind the actual time, no matter what I set the time to. I’ve noticed it does this when I open certain apps. In particular it seems to be apps that use Location Services, like Yelp, Facebook, and even the preinstalled Maps app. Whether Location Services is on or off makes no difference, opening the app will reset the time.”

There is no word of acknowledgement or possible fixes being offered by Apple right now. Here is a solution you can try out. But this does not work according to some users.

  • Power off the iPod Touch by holding the Home and Power button together
  • Restart by holding down the Power and Home buttons together once again
  • Connect your iPod Touch to iTunes and attempt to Restore via a backup. If possible, try the ‘Restore as new’ option.

Does this work? Do you have an alternate solution? Please tell in the comments.

iOS applications that allow users to download videos from YouTube to their iPhone or iPod Touch have been available for quite some time on the Cydia jailbreak app store. However, app developer Max Weisel has now released MiTube which is possibly the first official iPhone/iPad app on the Apple App Store that will let users perform the same task.

The newly released app is universal – that works on both the iPhone and iPad – and allows users to download videos of any resolution; including the HD quality videos. The app provides a basic search functionality that will allow users to search YouTube for videos and then lets them stream these clips either in low or high quality besides offering them an option to download it. The downloaded videos reside within the app and may be transferred to the users’ PC or Mac using the iTunes file sharing option.
