The Business Insider has made a fascinating observation. The new Apple TV that is known to be selling pretty well is missing from Amazon’s top 100 list of best sellers in electronics. That in itself is nothing interesting. Dan Frommer from BI notes that devices such as Roku’s XD streaming player rank behind Apple TV in niche lists like that of Digital Media devices. But when it comes to the overall rankings, Apple TV is nowhere in the list whereas Roky XD streaming player is ranked number 20.
“In theory, if each of those three devices is selling better than the Roku XD in the same category, they should be selling better than the Roku XD overall, too. So, in theory, the Apple TV is one of the top-20-or-so best-selling electronics, along with the Boxee Box and Roku XDS, and the Roku XD should be in the 20s somewhere.
So why is Apple TV kept off of Amazon’s best-selling gadgets list? Is there a secret reason?”
While it may sound preposterous to assume that Amazon may have decided to deliberately list Apple TV out in order to keep Amazon Kindle ranked number 1, that is definitely a speculation that is doing the rounds. We will have to wait for Amazon’s word on this before making a judgement.
There is something very similar to the strategies adopted by Amazon – one of the world’s largest eCommerce companies and AOL – the new online media company. Both the companies own pretty strong brands that have weathered the numerous internet bubbles over the years to still be telling their tale in 2010. There is something else that is very similar – the way the two companies go about their growth strategy.
Aol has been pretty vocal about their plan to become the go-to destination for everything media. The company owns some of the very popular portals in various segments – Engadget, TechCrunch, TMZ, PopEater, DailyFinance to name a few. And now, looking into the way Amazon has gone about its inorganic growth, it looks like the company wants to be in a similar position for eCommerce products.
Amazon’s recent acquisition of Diapers.com is just the latest in a series of ecommerce acquisitions in the past few years. The company has previously purchased other popular ecommerce companies from various segmens like BuyVIP, Fabric.com and Zappos. Of course, the portfolio is not as big as Aol in terms of volume. But in terms of value, this is pretty huge considering that this is eCommerce that we are talking about and not an online ads-based business.
It will be interesting to see how Amazon Inc. goes from here. And that refers not just to Amazon.com.
Amazon has introduced a major change to its publisher agreement for Kindle devices. According to the new agreement, Kindle Magazine and Newspaper publishers shall stand to earn as much as 70% of the publication’s retail price – net of delivery costs. For a perspective, until now, it was Amazon that cornered close to 70% of the earnings. The new agreement is set to get into effect starting December 1.
Getting into the new 70:30 agreement is not going to be easy. Publishers who want to sell their content with the new revenue share model should ensure that their publications are compatible with all Kindle devices and applications. Also, they should be accessible from all geographies where the publisher has rights to sell. This is clearly in an attempt to ensure that Amazon Kindle users continue to enjoy the nearly device-agnostic accessibility of Kindle content.
The higher revenue share should pep up the newspaper industry that has been facing stiff challenges with respect to monetizing their digital content better. The new agreement should thus be welcomed by these publishers.
Have you subscribed to the Amazon Disc+ on demand service yet? The service lets Amazon customers in the United States to stream select video titles to be streamed directly over their computer or television when they purchase the Blu-ray or DVD title from Amazon. This is a pretty exciting service since users can start watching the videos immediately upon purchase and do not have to wait until the disc arrives to explore its content.
Amazon has now announced that their Disc Plus on Demand service will now see an addition of over 10,000 titles. This brings a pretty huge competitive advantage to Amazon over competition since it enables purchased content to be watched over a number of devices including compatible television, computer or a blu-ray player. The holiday shopping season may not have started as yet, but Amazon is already getting into the swing of things with their latest offer. Gamers looking at Amazon for purchasing video games are now in for a treat with the etailer’s new ‘Buy two get one free‘ offer. What is exciting is that most of the games in the list are already marked lower than their original retail price which means this is quite a deal.
However, this is apparently for a limited time only. Amazon has noted that the deal will only last through November 6. But be sure for some extension or resumption of sorts as the holiday shopping season peaks. This might just be the perfect teaser ahead of the main shopping season.

Looking to purchase Samsung Galaxy Tab on T-Mobile? Then you should probably hit their retail stores. The device costs $399 with a 2 year contract and is available unsubsidized for $599. But in any case you want to pre-order one right away from Amazon, get ready to shell out $50 more. Amazon has just put up their T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Tab up for pre-order at $699 – that’s still $50 lower than the original retail price of $749 and is unsubsidized.
So what does the pre-order mean? It means your device won’t arrive until the 10th of November. Amazon notes that the Tab will be officially released on November 9 and give one day for shipping which means you should get the device by the 10th.

Amazon has announced that a Kindle eReader app for the newly launched Windows Phone 7 platform is coming very soon. The application will come with all of the features that users have to come expect from a Kindle app that includes the WhisperSync technology, access to the Kindle ebook store, integrated shopping experience as well as other features like the ability to find personalized book recommendations plus the facility to send these recommendations to friends right from the app interface.
With WhisperSync, users may buy a book once and be able to sync the purchase with any of the other Kindle supported devices including the Kindle eReader, iOS and Android applications. The Windows Phone 7 application should give users access to over 725,000 books on the US Kindle store.
The Amazon Kindle app for Windows Phone 7 will be the first major ebook application on this new mobile platform and is expected to launch later this year.

Amazon has announced that the price of the popular Android device has now been slashed from the original $499.99 to $99.99. Of course, this price is factoring in a two year contract that you will have to sign up with Sprint. Nevertheless, this is by far the biggest discount offered on EVO so far.
Sprint, the carrier that will offer network services to HTC EVO has also been offering free activation to users moving to their network. This offer has however been limited up to October 18.

It’s not been long since the T-Mobile G2 was launched but looks like there are not too many people queuing up to get hold of this one. Amazon has announced a revision in the retail price of this new Android 2.2 phone that brings down the price of T-Mobile G2 by $100. If you head over to Amazon, you will now be able to buy this Android handset for $99. Compare this with the $199 that you pay at other outlets like Best Buy and you know the difference.
But it is interesting that this price revision has come so soon after launch. We may have expected a bit of price-wars to happen considering that the phone was available on multiple channels. But a sale at $99 (with a 2 year contract that is) sounds so low that it is more of an indication that Amazon has not been moving enough volumes rather than a possible price-war with rival retailers.
