Audible – one of the largest and most popular digital audio books company has announced that their iPhone app is now available for download from the Apple App Store. The app is available for free though users will need to pay for access to several audio books.
The Audible iPhone app has a few disadvantages. But here are the benefits first. Audible claims a possession of over 75,000 titles. Also, while you may need a Wi-Fi connection to download titles that are over 20MB in size, you must note that this is a restriction that is put on most of the other apps as well. Audiobook Playback has been reviewed by users to be very crisp and clear. The app is also compatible with iOS multitasking, OS playback controls (so you can navigate using clickers on a compatible set of headphones) and a really useful bookmark system. Interestingly, Audible Playback also works with other audio books downloaded from iTunes.
So what are the negatives? The biggest gripe is that users will have to navigate to the website using Mobile Safari while making any purchase. While this is cumbersome, you may want to blame Apple for it since the company charges pretty heavily for in-app purchases. So it is evident that Audible has taken the browser route so as to not pay a hefty commission to Apple.
