There used to be a time when GPS apps were one of the most expensive and profitable applications on the smartphone marketplace. With the proliferation of Android devices that come with free GPS alternatives, that may no longer be the case. But that doesn’t mean the GPS software makers are out of business. The companies have still been adopting to the new market environment by making applications for these smartphone platforms.
Garmin is now revealed to be making new applications for the iOS and Blackberry platforms. The apps are expected to be offered as free downloads and these new PND applications is expected to be made available on the iPhone App Store and Blackberry App World shortly.
Meanwhile, Garmin has also inked an exclusive deal with Asus for the Android platform. The partnership will mean that Asus will hold rights to complete branding and distribution of Garmin’s PND downloads on the Android platform. Of course, this deal will not affect Garmin’s plans for the other smartphone platforms like the iOS and Blackberry OS.
Earlier this month, Palm made an announcement stating that the upcoming Palm Pre 2 was going to be launched on Verizon and also on a Canadian carrier. I have no idea why the statement bluntly stated ‘Canada‘ and not any particular carrier. But from the looks of it, it is going to be Rogers and not one of the CDMA carriers.
A leaked photo that is now doing the rounds has got us convinced that Rogers in Canada shall be offering the new Palm Pre 2 when the device launches in the North American country later this year. It is not clear whether Palm (or HP rather) intends to bring the new phone at the same time to all of North America. In that case, expect Palm Pre 2 to be available around the 11th of next month. That is when Verizon is expected to release their unit.
It has taken a long time for Yahoo to completely outsource their search engine and marketing efforts from their in-house team to Microsoft’s Bing team. Nevertheless, it is now learned that the transition is complete. Moving on, all the search results as well as the associated advertisements on the Yahoo portal and partner websites will be handled by Microsoft. An email was sent to Yahoo advertisers announcing them of this development.
The partnership brings a significant level of benefit to both the companies. The total search engine share of Bing and Yahoo combined in the US is close to 30% and this partnership will bring better competition from advertisers and consequently higher ad dollars.
What does this mean to the existing Yahoo advertisers? The company has noted that the search marketing solutions page will be accessible for the next five months during which the advertisers are expected to effect a complete transition to the Microsoft adCenter. Advertisers may no longer use the Yahoo interface to run campaigns.

Sn0wbreeze, the popular jailbreak tool that lets Windows users jailbreak their iDevices will now be capable of jailbreaking an iPad running the upcoming iOS 4.2 platform. If you are not aware, Sn0wbreeze is the Windows jailbreak tool that is similar to the PwnageTool that works on Mac computers. The latest update makes use of the exploit that was unearthed by George Hotz; the popular jailbreaker who is known better as GeoHot, in his Limera1n exploit that was released as a jailbreak tool earlier this month. This is an untethered bootrom level jailbreak which means you don’t have to redo the jailbreak each time the iPad reboots.
But before you get excited, do note that we only have the confirmation of the rooting as of now and a public download is not out yet. In any case, most of you may not need it until the new iOS is out for public download. So expect a solution in place by then.
Earlier this month, T-Mobile unveiled their new myTouch Android phone. As we had noted back then, the slider phone comes with a 3.8″ WVGA display, a 1GHz SnapDragon processor, a 5-Megapixel rear facing camera and other features like 720p HD video recording, video calling, etc. The device will run on the carrier’s HSPA+ network that will give realistic browsing speeds of up to 14Mbps.
T-Mobile has now announced that myTouch 4G will begin to ship starting November 3. Pricing depends on where you buy it from. Hit the T-Mobile retail stores directly and you will be shelling out $199.99 along with a 2 year contract. On the other hand, third party retailers like WireFly are selling the phone for just $150.
The device will be running Android 2.2 and considering that this is a HTC make, you will be treated to the regular Sense UI on the display.
According to folks at GigaOm, Apple is working with SIM card manufacturer, Gemalto to design a special SIM-card that could work with any carrier. According to the report, the custom SIM-card is being designed in a means to weaken the carriers’ hold on the device manufacturer and will instead bolster user preferences since the customers may now choose to go with their favorite carrier without having to submit to the carrier that Apple has partnered with.
It is noted that with this new mechanism, users may buy an iPhone over the web or at one of Apple’s stores. Once done, they may either activate their carrier over at the Apple Store, from the website or even through a download from the App Store. This is in contrast to the present model where customers will have to catch up with the carrier network to activate their connection.
There is not much more information about this as of now. But it is an interesting idea that we will keep a tab on.
With the oncoming holiday shopping season presenting a great opportunity at maximizing the sale of Apple’s popular iPad, the company is now offering an option for personal engraving on iPads to customers. This is similar to the personal engraving that customers have long been availing for the iPods.
The personal engraving is free. However, this will marginally offset the regular shipping time from “within 24 hours” to “1-3 business days“. But this is a small compromise for a personalized buy. Also, with a number of customers looking at the iPad as a possible gifting option, Apple has also included the iPad in its holiday gift wrap program that will let users package their iPads in custom gift boxes. This is not free though and comes at a price of $5.00.
You can order your personally engraved iPad from the Apple Store here.
So looks like almost everything that we heard about the new eReader from Barnes & Noble was correct. The popular publisher has now officially unveiled the new NOOKcolor – the new eReader with a color touchscreen.
Like what the rumors had suggested, the new NOOKcolor will come with a 7″ screen with a touchscreen display made of In-Plane Switching technology, an 8GB internal storage, a microSD slot that can hold 32GB and features like Wi-Fi, micro USB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The eReader will support a number of third party apps like Pandora, Chess and will come with a media player. These things surely make it more than just a ebook reading machine and can also be used to listen to music or watch videos.
As noted yesterday, the device will also include a NOOK kids app that will be targeted at kids. The eReader is noted to be available for $249 – just as it was earlier speculated.
We always knew this was coming and after Microsoft announced last week that an announcement was due on Tuesday, it was more or less confirmed that the new Microsoft Office 2011 productivity suite for Mac was releasing this week. Now it has.
The new Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac is now available for public consumption and brings with it, all the expected suite of applications like Word, Excel and Powerpoint. And perhaps in what should come as a huge relief, Microsoft has finally replaced Entourage with Outlook in the latest release.
A single license of the Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac software should cost Home and Student users between $109.99 and $149.99. On the other hand, for business users, this application should cost higher between $174.99 and $279.99.
Of course, the price is going to be cheaper if you are checking it out from third party retailers like Amazon.
Word is that Verizon is getting ready to announce a successor to the popular Droid Incredible. According to reports, the new phone, dubbed the Droid Incredible HD, shall be launched in less than a month from now; on November 23.
The Droid Incredible HD was first pictured back in August of this year, though there was no word on what it will be called or whether it was genuine at all. This new Android phone is expected to come with a 4.3″ capacitive touch screen, an 8-Megapixel camera with dual LED flash, a front facing camera, 768MB RAM, Dolby Mobile and SRS virtual sound, a kickstand and shall run on Android 2.2 with the new version of HTC Sense UI. It goes without saying then that the device will also be integrated with the new HTCSense portal.
It will be interesting to see if this new phone manages to make its mark during the competitive holiday shopping season.
