How To Use FaceTime From Unlocked iPhone 4

As you are probably aware, Apple’s new FaceTime video calling feature does not work on unofficial carriers (like T-Mobile USA). As you are probably aware, Apple’s new FaceTime video calling feature does not work on unofficial carriers (like T-Mobile USA). This is because of the way these carriers handle the SMS sent from/to the Gateway for activation of service. So, if you are on an unlocked iPhone 4 looking to use FaceTime, here’s a way to get it done.

PushFix, a jailbroken iPhone app developer has released an iPhone app named MiTime that will help you out in this regard. The application fixes the inherent issue with recognizing the SMS from the gateway so that FaceTime is activated. However, because this procedure will require the developer to send you two international SMSes, the app itself is not priced cheap and is available on the Cydia store for a price of $5.99.

Do note that this app will only work on authorized devices though users from across the world (except Cambodia) can make use of this app to activate FaceTime on their unlocked iPhone 4. Here’s a video on how the process works.

Many iPod Touch users have been complaining on the Apple support forums about a new iOS 4 related issue – the time on their device appears to be randomly changing. Most of the users who have been experiencing this issue have been noticing it only after their device was upgraded to the latest iOS 4 platform. One user writes,

“Similar issue here with my 2nd gen iPod Touch, after upgradeing to iOS4. My time keeps “resetting” to exactly 1 hour 13 minutes behind the actual time, no matter what I set the time to. I’ve noticed it does this when I open certain apps. In particular it seems to be apps that use Location Services, like Yelp, Facebook, and even the preinstalled Maps app. Whether Location Services is on or off makes no difference, opening the app will reset the time.”

There is no word of acknowledgement or possible fixes being offered by Apple right now. Here is a solution you can try out. But this does not work according to some users.

  • Power off the iPod Touch by holding the Home and Power button together
  • Restart by holding down the Power and Home buttons together once again
  • Connect your iPod Touch to iTunes and attempt to Restore via a backup. If possible, try the ‘Restore as new’ option.

Does this work? Do you have an alternate solution? Please tell in the comments.

Carriers like AT&T allow users to access visual voicemail. Visual voicemails are different from the regular ones in that they reside on the phone very much like text messages or emails – you don’t have to listen through all the unheard voicemails at once. Instead, you can surf through the voicemails and tap and listen to the one you need.

Now if your carrier allows visual voicemails, then here is a way to make it possible to forward these voicemails to your email account so that you may access it even without your iPhone in hand. The procedure sadly however needs you to jailbreak your iPhone. Jailbreaking is pretty simple these days with websites like JailbreakMe. If you have the latest version of the iOS, you can rather check out our tutorials on jailbreaking your iPhone. Do however remember that this procedure can void your warranty and could cause serious performance issues on your device and hence proceed at your own peril.

Update : It appears to be incompatible with iOS 4 as of now.

So, if you do end up jailbreaking your iPhone, all you will require to get started on voicemail email forwarding is to download the Voicemail Forwarder app from Cydia. With the app installed, visual voicemails will now carry a button against their listing that can be tapped to fire up an email with the current voicemail tagged as an attachment. You can access these files now from any internet connected computer.

The app costs $2.99 on the Cydia store. It is not clear if the app is compatible with the latest iPhone 4 though.

Jailbreak iOS 4.0.2 On iPhone 3GS With PwnageTool

If you own an iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom and have already upgraded to iOS 4.0.2 that disables the popular JailbreakMe.com exploit, then PwnageTool just makes it possible for you to jailbreak your device once again. If you own an iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom and have already upgraded to iOS 4.0.2 that disables the popular JailbreakMe.com exploit, then PwnageTool just makes it possible for you to jailbreak your device once again. Of course, this is not the only solution. I had also recently written about the alternate fix from RedSn0w for users on iOS 4.0.2.

Before you proceed though, remember to backup all the contents of your iPhone via iTunes. Also, do note that this is an unofficial release and may contain bugs. So, it’s not advisable to do it if you are not savvy to take care of complications yourselves. Also note that jailbreaking shall void your warranty and so you are going to do this at your own peril.

Update: Some readers have commented that the process doesn’t seem to work. Do note that this is an unofficial release and is likely to have issues. So, proceed if you are still keen to give it a try.

So here’s what you’ve got to do

  • Launch PwnageTool. You will be asked to pick your device. Click iPhone 3GS
  • The appropriate firmware will be automatically selected from the desktop. If not do it manually
  • When asked “Do you have an iPhone contract that would activate normally through iTunes?“, specify NO. This is for those of you who also have unlocked devices. Those users on officially supported carriers like AT&T may choose YES
  • PwnageTool will now build the custom .IPSW firmware. When it’s done, you will be displayed a message that reads, ‘ihaz success
  • Now, connect your iPhone to iTunes and while pressing the alt/shift button on your keyboard, click on your iPhone model on the iTunes sidebar. Choose to “Restore” your device and specify the firmware saved in the computer desktop
  • iTunes will now restore your iPhone with the custom firmware. The process will take several minutes. Once the process is complete, the iPhone should reboot.

This completes the jailbreak process.

The tussle between Apple and Adobe will potentially never get resolved. That means Flash lovers will never be able to access Adobe Flash on their iDevices for quite some time to come. That’s if you are not willing to jailbreak your iPhone.

Popular iPhone hacker, Comex, has announced that he has successfully ported Frash – the jailbreak utility that lets users run Flash 10 on the iPad – to the new iPhone 4. Of course, as you guessed it, the process will require you to first jailbreak your iPhone. Do remember that though jailbreaking has been made legal in countries like the US, the procedure can still void your Apple warranty and can also potentially slow down your device performance.

Nevertheless, if you have made up your mind, you can first proceed to JailbreakMe.com, the website that provides a browser-based jailbreaking utility to break into your iPhone OS. Once you are done with the jailbreak, you can follow these steps below

  • Launch Cydia and open the ‘Manage’ tab. Tap on the ‘Edit’ option
  • Add the following repository : http://repo.benm.at/
  • Now navigate to the the ‘Search‘ tab and key-in Frash. Tap on the Frash app and tap ‘Install‘ to install the application
  • Reboot the iPhone to complete the process

You are done. Flash content can now be accessed from the websites on Mobile Safari. If you need more help with the installation, watch the video below.

Bloggers looking at iPhone as an additional channel for gaining website traffic may now rejoice at the launch of a new tool that will enable them to create an iPhone app for their blog or website. The tool from MyAppBuilder makes use of RSS feeds generated for the website to create an iPhone app specifically for your website in just a few clicks.

To be clear, the tool is not free. However, at a monthly cost of $29, the cost for creating an iPhone app should be significantly lower than the alternatives available – especially for bloggers who do not possess technical coding skills. To get started, users must sign up with the MyAppBuilder application who will then be guided through a series of defined steps to upload pictures, RSS feed, etc. to the application. Interestingly, MyAppBuilder has noted that the application will automatically proceed to submit the app to the App Store for review which means users may not have to go through the approval process themselves.

If you are interested, check out the sign up page on MyAppBuilder website and let us know how it works in the comments below.

The iPhone Dev team has announced that their UltraSnow unlocking solution for the new iPhone 4 is now available for download. If you are one of those who hate being tied to AT&T – or any of the other locked carriers – this solution will now set you free.

To get started though, you will need to first jailbreak your iPhone 4. This is now possible with the recently released JailbreakMe browser-based iPhone jailbreaking tool. Once this is done, launch the Cydia app store and install UltraSn0w from there.

Do note that only a certain number of iPhone basebands are supported. That includes 01.59 for iPhone 4 along with 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04 on iPhone 3G/3GS. If you are not able to locate the UltraSn0w tool on Cydia, add the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository to get started.

Of course, Apple can void your warranty for attempting a jailbreak and so unless you are absolutely sure about what you are doing, do not attempt the unlock.

Ever since the new iPhone and iOS launched, Apple has been facing one issue after another. Of course, we have seen issues with poor reception and proximity sensor. But there have also been several other issues including slow 3G upload, unreliable Wi-Fi network, etc. If this was not enough, several iPhone 3G users have been complaining since the launch of the new iOS 4 about facing an extremely slow system performance post the OS installation.

Recently, Apple acknowledged the issue and has promised to look into the solution. But before the company comes up with a solution few weeks later, here is a simple fix that will see your iPhone 3G start performing blazingly fast again. Here is what you need to do

1. On the iPhone home screen, tap Settings.

2. Navigate to Settings -> General -> Home Button -> Spotlight Search

3. Deselect all the options under Spotlight search

You are done. It is being noticed that the system sluggishness may be due to the presence of spotlight search and disabling it can temporarily solve the issue. Do you see similar improvements? Write back in the comments.
