As you are aware, the popular one-tap browser based jailbreak solution, JailbreakMe.com was rendered useless not so long ago. Since then, though new jailbreak solutions have come about, nothing has created as much headlines as the newly announced SHAtter exploit. SHAtter makes use of a hardware exploit that would render iDevices permanently jailbroken and hence will be a much more reliable jailbreak tool when released.

That the Chronic Dev team is working on building a reliable and easy jailbreak tool using the SHAtter exploit is not exactly news since we have been awaiting an announcement from them for sometime now. However, folks at the iPhone Dev Team have recently announced that they have been able to build a beta version of the new PwnageTool that utilizes the SHAtter exploit. A proof-of-concept video is below.

The team has however indicated that we are still sometime away from a complete solution,

Although PwnageTool was a useful first test of a full iPod 4G jailbreak via SHAtter, it’s really overkill compared to the faster tools being developed. Its main use in PwnageTool will be for those with iPhone4’s, to allow updates while preserving the baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock.

So the earlier rumors were true after all. As we had noted in our article earlier this month, Apple is indeed expanding the retail availability of the iPad to Target. In the latest announcement, Target – the Minneapolis based retailer  has announced that the tablet device from Apple shall be hitting their retail shelves starting October 3. All six models of the iPad shall be available for purchase and the prices of these units are likely to stay the same. However, if you do own a Target credit card, you are eligible to earn a 5% discount on the purchase of iPad until October 17.

Target has noted that their offering shall be extremely valuable for customers whose locations are not serviced by an Apple Store. However, Target won’t have it easy considering that Best Buy shall be expanding their iPad offering to all retail locations starting next week.

Game Center For iPhone 3G Now Ported

When Steve Jobs unveiled the new Game Center on iOS 4.1, he was quick to point out that the gaming features will not be available for older iPhone models like the iPhone 3G. Now as disappointing as that sounds, here is some good news if you own a jailbroken iPhone 3G. Apple’s new Game Center for iOS 4.1 has just been ported to the iPhone 3G model.

“The process involves modification of some .plist files found in the original GameCenter.ipa file for iPhone 3GS, and then SSH’ing this modified file on to jailbroken iPhone 3G running iOS 4.1. Since modifying .ipa files breaks Apple’s DRM, I cant share the exact instructions, or the modified file with you.”

We hear that the Game Center works seamlessly on the older iPhone model as well and hence it is surprising why Apple decided to not include this functionality on iPhone 3G. Well, on second thoughts and to be honest, it’s not very surprising considering that Apple is known to disincentivize people owning older iPhone models to retain their handsets in favor of newer handsets.

We have had tools to jailbreak iOS 4.1 on iPhone 3G/3GS as well as iPod Touch 2G for a few days now. As I had written earlier this week, the new Redsn0w jailbreak for iOS 4.1 does not work on Windows and is only supported on the Mac OS X operating system. If you are […]

If you are a Windows user who did not have a chance to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch, well the wait is probably over.

Sn0wbreeze 2.0, another jailbreak solution from iH8Sn0w is released that gives Windows users the tools to effect a jailbreak on their iPhone or iPod Touch. The latest release makes use of a custom firmware that retains the baseband and is hence useful if you also want to unlock your iPhone with Ultrasn0w.

The file is close to 14MB and can be downloaded by clicking here.

The new version will thus also allow users to export Numbers documents in MS-Excel and Keynote files in MS-PowerPoint formats. These applications are also noted to now import documents in these Microsoft Office compatible formats quicker and more reliably.

Apple has been acting pretty benevolent in recent times with a modified App Store policy. The company has now approved the VLC Media Player app for iPad that will let users watch movie files that are not compatible with the iTunes format on their iPad. A month back, this may have been unthinkable. But ever since Apple made a move to get friendlier with the app developer community, things appear to have changed.

But this is no voluntary benevolence. Speculations are that Apple may be acting to protect itself from the prying eyes of the government who have been accusing Apple of being too closed for healthy competition. Another speculation is that Apple is trying to win back developers that it seems to be losing to the Android platform that has been growing in popularity over the past one year.

Either way, this is happy news for users. Check out the free VLC media player app on the App Store by clicking here.

Napster – the popular music streaming service has finally arrived on the iPhone. The new Napster app is available for download on the iPhone and iPod Touch and will give users access to close to 10 million songs on demand. The application itself is free to download though you will have to be a paid subscriber to receive access to the music files. The subscription costs amount to $10 a month.

The application does a lot of things besides simply streaming music. Users can save songs and albums on the local storage in order to access them offline later. Additionally, users may also create playlists, bookmark and play favorites, automix songs, etc.

This is a very valuable addition to the App Store since it effectively brings a Zune Pass like music subscription service to the iOS platform. Check out the app by clicking here.

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), the largest online retailer is learned to be negotiating with UK based DVD rental company, LoveFilm for a possible acquisition. According to reports on the Sunday Times, Amazon has made an offer that values the British company at close to 200 million Pounds ($313 million).

As of now, this is still a speculation since neither of the parties have confirmed the rumors. However, the possibility is not too far-fetched either. Amazon already holds close to 42% of the stakes in LoveFilm after the company’s European rental operations were merged with LoveFilm back in 2008.

London-based LoveFilm was established in 2002 and today operates in several European countries. The company is privately held and posted revenues of close to $150 million in 2009. The company handles close to 65,000 unique DVD titles in UK alone and has over one million registered members in UK, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Germany.

By now, many of you may have already given up on your hope to lay hands on a white iPhone 4. After all the hype and hoopla during launch, the white iPhone today is more or less forgotten. While the device was earlier speculated to have been delayed just by a few weeks, Apple later confirmed that the phone will be available not until later this year.

We are just three months away from new year and so there are doubts over Apple’s launch plans. However, in a recent email exchange, Steve Jobs has purportedly indicated that the phone may be available by Christmas. While the authenticity of this email is questionable, this is what the Apple customer wrote in his email

“I want the white one but Apple said it won’t be available until later this year. I know you must be asked this question hundreds of times a day but do you think we can expect to get the white iphone for xmas?
I hope you can answer. Thank you Steve.”

And Steve is reported to have replied,

“Christmas is later this year.”

So there you go. Even though we are not sure if this is genuine, the launch of a white-colored model for the Christmas season does make sense and we hope it turns out to be true.

Earlier this month, Apple announced that they were easing their restrictions on third party applications. Cupertino soon followed it up by making the App Store review guidelines public thus bringing the much needed transparency to the App Store system.

Now following these moves, Google Voice apps – one of the segments that was banned last year following Apple’s growing enmity with Google – are making a comeback to the App Store. One of the first apps to be made available is GV Connect – a Google Voice based application that allows users to send text messages, make calls and voicemails. Another popular application, GV Mobile is learned to be stuck at the approval stage still, though indications are that the application should soon make its way to the App Store.
