Earlier this month, Apple announced that they were easing their restrictions on third party applications. Cupertino soon followed it up by making the App Store review guidelines public thus bringing the much needed transparency to the App Store system.

Now following these moves, Google Voice apps – one of the segments that was banned last year following Apple’s growing enmity with Google – are making a comeback to the App Store. One of the first apps to be made available is GV Connect – a Google Voice based application that allows users to send text messages, make calls and voicemails. Another popular application, GV Mobile is learned to be stuck at the approval stage still, though indications are that the application should soon make its way to the App Store.

You can check out GV Connect on the App Store by clicking here.

For a long time, the native YouTube app on the iPhone has stayed frozen in time. Though the website made a significant decision to replace star-ratings with a Like/Dislike rating back in March this year, successive iterations of iOS that have been released since then have not effected the change to the iPhone app.

That finally changes with the release of iOS 4.2. The new beta version of the upcoming iOS platform has revealed the arrival of the Like/Dislike button to the iPhone. Users viewing YouTube videos on their iPhone shall now be able to synchronize their Like database with YouTube videos they rate on the website or from other internet connected devices.

Want to work on the MS Excel document on your home computer while you are on the move with just your iPhone or iPad by your side? Parallels, the developers of Mac Desktop virtualization software have announced a new application that will make it possible. The software allows members to open any Windows-based applications like Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook to be accessed from the iPhone and iPad.

This is a pretty powerful solution to the various drawbacks that come with owning an iOS device – including the inability to run Flash. Since the Parallels window basically launches all kinds of Windows applications, any Flash application opened from inside the application will work seamlessly. Of course, playing Flash games is still going to be a problem in the absence of a mouse-based control. Nevertheless, the application is going to be pretty useful.

The iOS app itself is free, but do note that you will need a Mac computer running a Parallels Desktop for Mac software to in turn access the Windows computer. And that software does not come for cheap and is priced at close to $80. Nevertheless, if you are interested, check out the application at the App Store here.

Dw-C, the developer of iWebCamera – an iPhone that will let you use your iPhone as a web camera – has released a newly updated version of the application that fixes several bugs as well as brings enhanced features to this application. The application can be integrated with other apps such as Skype, Microsoft Live Messenger, or any other application where you will need a web camera. The app supports both landscape and portrait modes and the latest version is compatible with the retina display of iPhone 4.

While this is definitely an impressive application that really solves a purpose, there are some things you need to read though. Firstly, this iPhone app requires the iPhone to be connected to the same network as the computer. That also means no 3G. Secondly, this app only supports video and does not take in audio. Finally, the app does not come for cheap and is available at a price of $4.99 at the App Store.

Interested? You should check out the app at the App Store here.

The YouTube terms of service prohibits users from downloading videos from the website. This was a primary reason behind Apple banning the free iPhone app MiTube not so long ago. Now if you are still looking for an alternative, here is an app that will enable the process for you. The YourTube app is available on Cydia for jailbroken users and provides a way to download HD YouTube videos to the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Besides this, the application also lets you import these downloaded videos to your iPod app.

Of course, since this is a jailbreak app, non-jailbroken iPhone users cannot access the application. You can of course use one of our jailbreaking guides to get started (unless you have not updated to the latest OS). But do remember that jailbreaking can void your warranty.

The latest update of YourTube is compatible with iPhone 4 and iOS 4 as well and is available at a price of $5. Already own this iPhone app? Then you are eligible for an upgrade at just $1 if you had purchased the older app before July 1.

Looking for a way to optimize your battery and extend its life? There’s an app for that. Unfortunately though, that’s on the Cydia store and not in the Apple App Store which you means you will be required to jailbreak your iPhone. The new Auto3G app is available on the BigBoss repository on Cydia and works with iPhone 3G, 3GS and the latest iPhone 4.

What the app basically does is to turn off the 3G radio each time your iPhone is locked. Consequently, your iPhone will stay connected to the 2G EDGE network that consumes less battery when your iPhone is not in use. Also, the app will automatically turn 3G on when the device is unlocked. The developers claim that this simple functionality will help in doubling your iPhone battery – that’s 7 hours of talk time on 3G and 14 hours of talktime on 2G.

The Auto3G app is available for purchase now at Cydia for a price of $5.99. Check out the video below for how it works.

As you know, Netflix recently released their movie and television show streaming application for the iPhone. With this, iPhone users have two really good alternatives to choose when it comes to watching movies on their iDevice – Hulu Plus and Netflix. So which of the two options works better?

Zatznotfunny looks into three elementary parameters – app launching speed, battery consumption and 3G experience and notes that Hulu Plus is marginally better than Netflix when it comes to the overall experience. The primary point of concern has been the launch speed of the Netflix app. According to the website’s review, Netflix takes as long as 18 seconds to launch from cold start while on a 3G network. Hulu on the other hand loads in less than 10 seconds. In terms of battery consumption, the website points out that Hulu Plus was marginally less taxing on the battery though the difference in performance were not very noticeable. Zatznotfunny also points out that Hulu Plus did a better job at keeping the video running over a 3G network.

Overall, it now looks like Hulu Plus is the winner. Have you used both the apps? Write down your experiences.
