How To Video Stream From Mac To Apple TV

Earlier this month, Erica Sadun – hacker and writer for TUAW had launched an alpha-stage ad supported  tool called AirPlayer that enabled users to stream videos from their iPhone or iPad to a Mac computer using AirPlay. The tool basically hacked a Mac and made it camouflage itself as an Apple TV that subsequently helped her stream her videos from an iDevice using AirPlay.

Now in another nifty development, Sadun has developed another tool called AirFlick that will enable Mac users to stream videos from their computers to an Apple TV. She writes,

“AirFlick works by transforming your Mac into a web browser, the same way AirPlay works on your iPhone or other iOS device. For Mac-based files, AirFlick tells your Apple TV to connect to a local URL and serves the data that the Apple TV plays back. So long as those files are in a supported format such as mp4, m4v, mp3, etc, the Apple TV can read and display the file data.”

AirFlick comes with a number of additional features like transcoding of unsupported file formats in real time as well as the ability to play videos directly from the web.

You can download the alpha-version of the software by clicking here. Also, check out a video demo of AirFlick embedded below.

How To Stream Videos From iPhone To Mac Using AirPlay

If you are an Apple TV owner, you may have already checked out the AirPlay feature that lets users to stream videos and other media content from an iOS-based device to your television over Apple TV. Now, Erica Sadun – a hacker and a writer for TUAW has come up with a custom version of AirPlay that brings the nifty wireless streaming service to Macs.

Called AirPlayer, this software basically lets a Mac to camouflage itself as an Apple TV thereby letting you stream videos to your computer. AirPlayer does not require you to jailbreak your device and is currently available only for Macs. Erica says that a variant of AirPlayer can be easily created for Windows and Linux platforms as well though she is unlikely to release one soon.

So, if you are a Mac user, then head over to Erica’s website here to download an alpha-stage ad-supported version of AirPlayer.

Android Hack To Prevent Data Throttling By Carriers

Most people signing up for unlimited data plans often miss out on the fine-print that legitimizes carriers to throttle your data speed when you breach a data cap. Such policies are quite evidently an annoyance given that most of us pay a premium for unlimited data plans just because we need to satisfy our mobile web requirements.

So if you are one of those Android users frustrated with such data throttling from carriers, you can now make use of a hack to ensure you do not have to suffer these slow internet speeds any longer. Folks at XDA Developers have this tutorial to take you through the process. As with any of the tutorials from this site, you must realize that the procedures can be risky and you may end up bricking your phone. Also, the carriers have other ways to ensure you don’t continue your voracious data consumption – they can suspend your contract, for instance.

In any case, should you try the method, don’t forget to tell us how it works in the comments below.

How To Watch Flash Videos On iPhone Safari Browser Without Jailbreak

We had recently written about a new browser app for the iPhone called Skyfire. The browser let users access Adobe Flash content on the iPhone without having to jailbreak the iDevice. As you may know already, Skyfire makes use of a server-side technology to render Flash content in iPhone-supported formats. The popularity of Skyfire has also been its bane since the load on Skyfire’s servers is learned to have slowed down the processing in some cases.

Now if you are one who likes to watch a lot of video content, here is an alternative to look at. iOSFlashVideo is a Javascript bookmarklet that enables iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users to watch Adobe Flash videos from websites like MetaCafe, Vimeo and DailyMotion from the comfort of the native iOS browser without having to jailbreak your device.

To get started, visit  http://iosflashvideo.fw.hu/ from your iPhone browser and hit the + button at the bottom of the screen to bookmark the link. Now, tap on the Bookmarks icon on the Mobile Safari window to edit this link. You may notice a few characters before the javascript code so that the bookmark page looks something like this.

iOS Flash Video

Now hit ‘Done‘ to save. Next time you want to watch a Flash video on your browser, simply tap on the bookmarks button and select iOSFlashVideo to start watching these videos.

Downgrading From iOS 4.2.1? New App To Save SHSH Blob Directly from iPhone

If you own a jailbroken iPhone or iPad, you may occasionally want to downgrade to an older firmware. Under such circumstances, you will require what is called the SHSH blob for the older firmware. SHSH blobs are like a unique ID for your device at a particular firmware that is used by Apple to authenticate your device when it is connected to iTunes.

Conventionally, applications like TinyUmbrella are used for this purpose. A new app called iSHSHit has now been released that enables this process to happen directly from the iDevice. iSHSHit is a free download from the BigBoss repository on Cydia and by launching the application, you can choose to save the blob over the Cydia servers with just a simple tap of a button.

Once done, users may also choose to send a backup copy of the SHSH blob to their email address with another tap. The application is extremely simple to use and is quite nifty if you have already jailbroken your iDevice.

Enable Copy-Paste On Android Phones With New CopyAndPaste Application

Why is it that every new smartphone platform in the market has to go through a phase when basic functionalities like copy-paste are not available to users? Anyway, there is a tweak available now for Android phones that will enable this feature. The application is right now in the alpha phase which quite obviously means that there are a lot of bugs that need to be worked on. Developer ‘indexphp123‘ writes,

I have just released an application CopyAndPaste in alpha release onto the market if anyone would like to try it out.

The application is one way of solving the issue of selecting text in android. There are a lot of bugs to be worked on, but the main problem is the inaccuracy of the OCR engine. If enough people find the app useful then I will continue to update it and possibly make it open source.”

You can check out the application as well as monitor the updates from this XDA forum thread here.

How To Record HD Videos On iPhone 3GS

Apple is notorious for building hardware capable of handling advanced technology and yet disabling them with their software. Now if you are with an iPhone 3GS, you may not have HD video recording enabled even though the ARM Cortex processor is perfectly capable of handling them. So how do you get it enabled then?

Firstly, you will need to jailbreak your iPhone. You do know the risks involved right? Jailbreaking can void your warranty and can even brick your device. So the risk is all yours. Once done, you need to install OpenSSH for iPhone. Go to the Cydia App Store and install this application. You can use Cyberduck to SSH with a Mac or if you are on Windows, use WinSCP. The connection settings are

  • IP address: available from the Settings —>WiFi —> Network Name (the name of your WiFi network which, hopefully for security sake, is not the default “linksys”)
  • Username: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SFTP for Cyberduck and SCP for WinSCP

Done? Now download HDVideo3GS.zip and extract it. The folder has 4 files. Of these, copy the N88AP.list file to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/ and the other 3 files (AVCapture.plist, CameraRollValidator.plist, MediaValidator.plist) to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/

That is it. Reboot your iPhone 3GS and you should be done.
