After a recent attempt made from Sony to block the DNS method for playstation consoles running custom firmware 3.55, psx-scene.com has still come up with yet another method to get these jailbroken PlayStation 3`s back again to the online Play Station Network.
Here is a step by step guide on how to make it work for you :
Step 1 :
Setup dnsmasq in order to resolve your regions update server accordingly, (fuk01.ps3.update.playstation.net in my case) and use auth.np.ac.playstation.net to your computer. You can add them under the /etc/hosts section and leave the rest of the settings under dnsmasq as default.
Step 2 :
Download Charles Web Debugging Proxy Application and setup reverse proxies for these two addresses on port 80 and port 443. Also add auth.np.ac.playstation.net to the list of locations in the SSL tab of Proxy Settings so that you are able to see the data that you are changing.
Step 3 :
Next, run the application and under Tools>Map Local, map the /update/ps3/list/uk/ps3-updatelist.txt on your regions server to a local copy.
Step 4 :
Step 5 :
Rename charles-proxy-ssl-proxying-certificate.crt to xx.cer (where xx is an already exisiting certificate)and then use your preferred method to replace the one in your flash.
Step 6 :
Set your PS3 DNS to the one you had setup.
Step 7 :
Go to your Charles application and set a breakpoint over there on all the https:// POST Requests.
Step 8 :
Now make an attempt to connect to the Play Station Network.
Step 9 :
On seeing the request in Charles, edit any instance of 3.55 that you come across in the headers to 3.56 and then click on Execute.
Step 10 :
If it does not work in a single go, please try giving it multiple shots as it may take you a couple of tries to get signed in finally.
The following steps mentioned above are of a brief nature and so i would highly recommend to go through the detailed instructions over here which are available with complete screenshots.

George Hotz, the popular PS3 and iOS hacker who is responsible for a number of hacks on the two platforms in the past is out with a video that demoes a Sony PlayStation 3 that has been jailbroken to run a custom version of firmware 3.55. But before you get excited, we must point out that this is merely a demo video at this stage and an actual jailbreak software is yet to be released. GeoHot has refused to offer an estimated time for release at this stage.
You can watch the video demo here.
For those looking for a background to this story, German hackers fail0verflow had recently released an exploit that they claimed could let users decipher the digital signature that Sony encrypts on its Playstation devices. This signature is used by the device to authenticate applications before they are run. GeoHot had earlier this week used this exploit to make the security keys of Sony PS 3 public. Now that a demo video is out, you must expect a jailbreak application shortly.
George Hotz, the popular hacker who is widely known as GeoHot in the jailbreak circles has made Sony’s PlayStation 3 security key public that could enable users to install custom firmwares and games on their console without going through the Sony platform. Thanking the German hacker group, Fail0verflow who discovered the exploit, Hotz wrote on his blog,
“props to fail0verflow for the asymmetric half. no donate link, just use this info wisely. i do not condone piracy”
The security keys are significant in that it is assigned to every legit application and is used by Sony to verify if any particular application the user is trying to open is legitimate or not. By making this security key public, software pirates can open copyrighted gaming applications illegally.
Sony is yet to acknowledge the issue and we hope they act soon enough to minimize the damage caused.
The update comprises of :-
Seasonal events has been added to the upper left of the GT Life screen enabling players to participate in official events that are held for a limited time wherein all participants follow the same set of rules and regulations and on completion of the event get rewards and experience.
Hot Car Dealer has been added to the left center of the GT Life screen. This section provides you with all the popular and rarely used cars.
Online Race Rewards and Experience wherein you complete a race in the “Open Lobby” or “My Lounge” and gain rewards and experience.
Driving Distance and Number of Wins in Online Races :- On completing a race in the “Open Lobby” or “My Lounge“, these attributes will affect your stats in the “Profile” and “Garage” sections of the game, which include results from online play too.
Improved Rewards for winning races in both A – Spec and B – Spec which have been increased for a limited time upto January 2011.
Apart from all of these, there are further updates and enhancements arriving in the near future.
Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that a Tom Raider trilogy pack is on its way and will be released in the first quarter of 2011. This release includes Tom Raider Legend, Tomb Raider Anniversary and Tomb Raider Underworld all on one single Blu-ray disc. It is however worth noting that this trilogy pack had started to appear in the retail list of Amazon Germany even before developer Crystal Dynamics could confirm the authenticity
Brand director for Tomb Raider Karl Stewart mentioned in his Tweet:
“Yes, it’s official. A Tomb Raider PS3 Trilogy pack is coming in the New Year. Full details coming next week – watch this space.”
This pack will be joining in the trilogy ranks of the Sly Collection which had released on November 9 along with the rumored Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia Trilogy packs. Amazon has revealed that the packs will release on 22nd March, 2011 and also mentions that all the three games will be offering a trophy support with a collectors edition unlocking both male and female Playstation home avatars.
Mass Effect 2, the PS3 game that is slated for a January 18 release will be using the engine that developers at Bioware originally created for Mass Effect 3. This news was revealed in a podcast by Jesse Houston, the producer of the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2. This is expected to offer a visually stunning experience to the PS3 user as compared to what was offered on the XBOX 360 version that was released earlier this year.
Speaking about this upcoming game,Houston said,
“One of the first things you’re going to see is improved graphics. We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content, the story and all of the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine.”
Houston has also promised some more cool additions to the game like improved planet scanning and including all patches and bug fixes that have been intended for the XBOX 360 version after the release. Mass Effect 2 for PS 3 is slated for release on January 18.
If you own an Sony PlayStation 3 that you are looking to jailbreak or downgrade, here is a newly launched app that could make the process quite simple. Only one problem here – you will need a HTC HD2 to go ahead with the jailbreak process.
The application to make this happen is PS3DJB. The app will first jailbreak and then take the user through the process of downgrading the PS3 firmware. To get started, you will need to download and install the PS3DJB and DowngradeUpdater applications on your SD card. Once this is done, you can choose to create backup files, jailbreak and also downgrade the firmware. You can find the complete downgrading instructions here.
In the words of the developer,
“This app just make things easier/noobier for people who want to jailbreak or downgrade there ps3. i personally got annoyed always having to open file explorer and hit both options to launch. i have a lot of crap on my sd card so this makes it easier for me and i hope others. it will also give you a dedicated folder for the downgrade.”
Do check the application out and let us know how the hack goes in the comments below.
If you are in the United Kingdom, you can start watching your favorite programs on Channel 4 and ITV from your PlayStation soon. Sony has announced a partnership with the two television channels to bring their content to PS3.
For what it’s worth, ITV has already been available as a web-based service for a while. Also, in the case of ITV, this expansion is not limited to Sony PS 3. The channel has revealed that they are leaving their services open for availability on other platforms – including the console rivals as well. However, in case of Channel 4, the television is likely to be available solely on Sony PS 3 for the moment. The television channel does not seem to have reached agreeable deals with Microsoft and Nintendo which means it will be available solely on PS 3 consoles for the time being.
PSJailbreak, the software that will enable PlayStation users to jailbreak their consoles will now be available at $99. The software was until now available at a price of $125. The jailbreak team has announced a number of major announcements that are likely to give a push to the sale of the jailbreak software which, we presume, may have seen a drop in recent times.
According to an announcement on the PSJailbreak blog, the developers have noted that apart from this price drop, they will also be making it possible for users to employ the PSDowngrade software an unlimited number of times. That means users may play 3D videos and online play using the 3.50 firmware and downgrade to play homebrew. The new updates to PSDowngrade and PSUpgrdader are noted to be free of charge. All future versions of PSJailbreak shall also be bundled with PSDowngrade free of charge.
You can purchase the jailbreak as well as downgrade software from the developer website here. Do you see the sales picking up with this price drop?
VUDU has announced the launch of a redesigned user interface that is better optimized for HD televisions with wide aspect ratios. This new UI of the popular movie rental service, dubbed VUDU 2.0, comes with a tabbed interface that will allow for better organization. Besides the launch, the company has also announced that high definition movie streaming will soon be enabled for PlayStation 3. According to a media statement from the company, the new HD video streaming on PS3 will include HD, HDX and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.
What’s more, the new incorporation of the new VUDU 2.0 UI will mean users can also make use of the PS3 motion controllers like PlayStation Move to navigate through menu options.
The high definition movie streaming facility for PS3 console is expected to be made available from November 23. Are you looking forward to this?
