Looking for a way to optimize your battery and extend its life? There’s an app for that. Unfortunately though, that’s on the Cydia store and not in the Apple App Store which you means you will be required to jailbreak your iPhone. The new Auto3G app is available on the BigBoss repository on Cydia and works with iPhone 3G, 3GS and the latest iPhone 4.

What the app basically does is to turn off the 3G radio each time your iPhone is locked. Consequently, your iPhone will stay connected to the 2G EDGE network that consumes less battery when your iPhone is not in use. Also, the app will automatically turn 3G on when the device is unlocked. The developers claim that this simple functionality will help in doubling your iPhone battery – that’s 7 hours of talk time on 3G and 14 hours of talktime on 2G.
