Apple Working On FaceTime Video Calling For Mac & PC?

Apple could be working on building a FaceTime video calling client for Mac and Windows platforms. According to reports on the French website, Mac4Ever, the Mac client could be integrated with the iChat interface. As you already know, FaceTime is Apple’s open standard software that enables video calling over the iOS platform. The feature was first introduced with iPhone 4 that was introduced earlier this year. Since then, the functionality has found moderate acceptance considering that FaceTime is only available between iPhone 4 users. Apple has since then also announced the functionality for the upcoming version of iPod Touch and there are speculations that the next generation iPad could be coming with a front facing camera to support this video calling feature. The functionality is currently restricted to work over Wi-Fi.

However, it is unlikely for Apple to be working on a Mac and PC client so fast. This is because Apple is not exactly known for concentrating on non-revenue generating channels. FaceTime, while this is a value adding service for the iDevice does not make direct revenue and it does no make any sense for Apple to lose its proprietary hold by launching a version for Windows computers. Nevertheless, this is a rumor that is worth a revisit after a few months.
