Who Owns Skype?

You might have been following the dispute over the past few months between VOIP provider Skype’s original founders and eCommerce giant eBay, the company that acquired them in 2005. Well, the dust has seemingly settled over the issue and new ownership agreements have been signed. Here are the stakes held by the various parties:

eBay owns 30%
Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis (Skype founders) own 14%
The rest of Skype is held by investors led by Silver Lake and includes JoltID Limited, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Andreessen Horowitz

Valuation of Skype : $2.75 billion
eBay received : $1.9 billion in cash with principal amount of $125 million with the deal closure
eBay also purchased a note from the buyers at a principal amount of $50 million

Skype saved my father’s life!! My nephew, who is in Europe, and my father who is in NC were communicating via Skype when Dad had his stroke. My nephew knew something was terribly wrong and called his father in the states who is a doctor, and his father called my mother, and instructed her to give him an aspirin and call 911. Because of the quick response, the hospital considered him a good candidate for the “clot-buster” drug for stroke victims. Dad is 89 years old and about 90% of where he was healthwise before the stroke.
I was out of the country when it happened. My sister alerted me through Skype, and I was able to stay in touch with Mother through “Skype-Out.”
I am so indebted to you for the quality of life my parents are still enjoying today as octogenerians. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
