Text Message Volume on VeriSign

VeriSign says text messaging has taken off in a real spectacular way in the first half of 2009 and their recent release regarding the SMS traffic proves their point. Here are some numbers:

Total Text messages sent in first half of 2009 : 178.8 billion
That is 26 messages per person on earth

VeriSign record for maximum messages in a 24 hour period : 1.2 billion
VeriSign record for maximum messages in an hour’s period : 102 million

Both the records were achieved on June 25, 2009 (second record between 3-4 PM), the day when Michael Jackson and Farrah Fowcett died.
