Mobile Phone Penetration : Country Rankings

China and India are among the countries with the fastest growth in mobile phones. However, when it comes to its penetration in the market, these countries still lag; which also speaks of the opportunities that exist in these markets.
Here is a ranking of the top 40 countries in terms of “number of mobile phones per 100 people”. Do note that this does not exactly translate into mobile phone users since in many Indian families, one cell phone can be used by more than one person.

I presume this was an international study and I guess Nigeria (or other African countries) did not make it to the top 40.

For an article that was written on March 23rd 2010, this information is hopelessly out of date and very misleading (I believe this data actually refers to 2002). For example, I believe that the penetration rate in China now is over 50%, rather than 16% as shown above!

The problem here is not with it being out-of-date. Rather, it is with the source of the data, which I believe is Admob in this case. Admob measures these data based on the ad impressions it receives from the various countries and uses a complicated algorithm based on its presence in the country plus various factors to get a number..I’m just assuming Admob got its data wrong for countries like China where such extrapolations may not work.
