Malfunction Rate of Laptops by Manufacturer

A study by SquareTrade looks into the malfunction rate among the different laptops over a three year period. The conclusion of the study is that smaller brands have higher reliability over bigger brands.

However, this has to be taken with a pinch of salt. SquareTrade is a third party warranty provider and it is unlikely that those who go for bigger brands would choose to get a SquareTrade warranty. Also, could it mean that bigger brands have higher approachability in terms of customer service and hence see greater support requests? Anyway, here are the malfunction rate projections over a three year period for various brands

Asus : 15.6%
Toshiba : 15.7%
Sony : 16.8%
Apple : 17.4%
Dell : 18.3%
Lenovo : 21.5%
Acer : 23.3%
Gateway : 23.5%
HP : 25.6%

Wow, I own a HP and have not had any problem in close to three years.
