Not surprisingly, older platforms like Symbian and Windows Mobile are not as popular as they once were, though in market share terms, they still rule the roost. Comscore has published their results (July 2010) for the smartphone platform market share study and this is how the numbers stack up. The numbers in brackets show the change in percentage points since July 2009

Symbian : 54.4% (-14.4)
Apple : 19.2% (9)
Microsoft : 11.6% (-2.3)
RIM : 8.0% (1.6)
Google : 6.1% (5.6)

Smartphone adoption in the EU5 (U.K., France, Germany, Spain, Italy) has grown 41 percent in the past year to 60.8 million subscribers. Currently, more than one out of every two smartphones is a Nokia manufactured device, although Nokia accounted for more than two out of every three smartphones a year ago.

Today, almost all the mobile platform developers own their own mobile app store. While not all of these platforms may be as successful as the iPhone App Store or the Android market place, there is no denying the fact that application marketplace have become an inevitable discussion point when you are purchasing a new mobile phone.

However, not all apps bring money to the platform and third party developers. A significant number of apps are offered free simply as a Lite version (and thereby luring users to go paid at a later stage) or because these applications bank of volumes and make money off ads.

So what is the proportion of free vs. paid apps on the various application stores? Distimo provides us the answers.

In just the three months between January and April 2010, close to 33.5 million mobile phone users in the US accessed a map application from their mobile phones.

So when do people actually access these applications? Here is a statistic from the study

Driving a car or another vehicle : 87.2%
Walking/Running/Biking : 17.2%
Using public transit : 16.7%

Smartphones definitely have played a huge role in this growth. Here is the number of smartphone users who were observed to have used a mobile map application during the month of April 2010 (and the YoY growth rate in brackets)

Total Mobile market : 16.773 million
Smartphones : 12.74 million (177%)
Feature phones : 4.03 million (-2%)

Consequently, the use of social networking apps jumped by 240% in the one year making it the fastest growing app category.

That was against a yearly download of an estimated 21.6 billion applications. However, FutureSource consulting in their recent study published have been less optimistic. According to them, the mobile app market would grow to see 16 billion downloads by 2013 – that’s close to 23% less than Gartner’s prediction. While the actual numbers will only be known as the future becomes clearer, here are numbers predicted in the latest study.
