It has been quite some time since we talked about Sony’s much touted PlayStation Move motion controller. You may recall our earlier announcements that the motion controller was supposed to launch in July this year – which was later corrected to September 2010.
So here is something that is more or less confirmed – Sony Playstation Move will launch only on October 21. That is the confirmed date at least for Japan. There is no word on whether Move will launch earlier in other markets. Nevertheless, Sony has confirmed that Playstation Move shall launch with six game titles at launch. They are
- EyePet (SCEJ, ¥3,980)
- Sports Champion (SCEJ, ¥3,980)
- Beat Sketch (SCEJ, ¥2,980)
- Fure! Fure! Bowling (aka High Velocity Bowling, SCEJ, ¥1,900)
- Machi Suberi (aka Kung Fu Rider, SCEJ, ¥3,980)
- Big 3 Gun Shooting (Namco Bandai, ¥6,279)
All these titles except the last one (Big 3 Gun Shooting) are Move-specific games. Following the launch, Sony is expected to make a few more gaming titles available. The list, along with the tentative date of release is here. Do note that all of these gaming titles are Move-specific.

Sounds exciting? Or disappointed at the delay?
Barnes and Noble announced a drop in prices of its Nook eReader. Amazon too offered a revised price for their new Kindle DX eReader. Following these drastic price cuts, Sony too is now learned to have dropped the price of their Sony Reader devices in order to stay competitive.
So how much do the Sony Readers cost now? Sony Reader Pocket edition which earlier retailed at $169 will now be $20 cheaper at $149. The attractive Sony Reader Touch Edition will now see the price being dropped from $199 to $169. Also, the most expensive eReader of the lot – the Sony Reader Daily Edition will now be priced at $299 – a good $50 drop from the earlier $349.
While this is definitely a good thing for consumers, it is neither a sustainable model, nor is beneficial to the manufacturers in the long term. The eReaders are already reeling under pressure from tablet PC which double up to serve several other functionalities including gaming, web browsing, media consumption, etc. With margins on eReaders already thin,we wonder how long it will be before these eReader manufacturers sell these devices at break-even to thrive merely on revenues made from ebook sales.

As with respect to the price, the 160GB version is expected to be available at ¥29,980 (USD$340) and the larger 320GB version shall be available at ¥34,980 (USD$400).
Does it sound enticing?

As we had expected, Sony is out with its announcement on the new PlayStation Plus subscription service at E3. Unveiling the new service, Sony has said that the subscription will get users “hundreds of dollars of products” every year.
What do these Plus users receive? For starters, the first three months for free. These users may get access to exclusive demos, trailers, DLC and beta version of new releases. The cost is set at $49.99 for a year of subscription and $17.99 for three months.
This sounds like a good deal – at least, better than what we had earlier thought.
Rumors are doing the rounds that Sony may announce a new low-cost version of the Sony Playstation 3 that may come at a $200 price tag. According to reports on the PSXExtreme, the company’s official portal for 3D promotion – Sony Style has posted details about a new Playstation 3 that is touted to be “starting at” $199.99.
So, there are two options here – Sony may try to trigger some spike in their sale numbers with a limited time discount offer. This is pretty likely considering the slow sales that Sony has been facing with their game console units. Alternately, Sony may be planning a launch of a low-cost PS3 unit to penetrate the market even better.
The latter option is not entirely unlikely. Microsoft has already tried this to much success with their XBox 360. That remains a speculation however and we have to wait until E3 gets underway to know what Sony has on offer.
Sony Playstation fans have never had the privilege to plug in HD despite high definition being a Sony stronghold. So it should not come as any surprise that the electronics maker has finally decided to offer a HDMI cable to its PS3 users in a new SKU that is expected to launch shortly.
According to rumors picked by PCWorld, the new accessory will be made available with a $350 version of PS3 that will come with 250GB. That is, the HDMI cable will still not be available with the $300 120GB version of the console. However, the $50 is not for HDMI cable alone. Users can also lay claim to a LittleBigPlanet Game of the Year edition with the new model. So that is – an HDMI cable, LittleBigPlanet GOTY edition and 130GB additional storage at $50 extra.
