Download YouTube Videos To iPhone, iPad & iPod Touch With Free App

iOS applications that allow users to download videos from YouTube to their iPhone or iPod Touch have been available for quite some time on the Cydia jailbreak app store. However, app developer Max Weisel has now released MiTube which is possibly the first official iPhone/iPad app on the Apple App Store that will let users perform the same task.

The newly released app is universal – that works on both the iPhone and iPad – and allows users to download videos of any resolution; including the HD quality videos. The app provides a basic search functionality that will allow users to search YouTube for videos and then lets them stream these clips either in low or high quality besides offering them an option to download it. The downloaded videos reside within the app and may be transferred to the users’ PC or Mac using the iTunes file sharing option.

The best thing about this app is that this is free. So what are you waiting for – click away to the iTunes store to download the app to your iDevice.

Update: Sorry, looks like it’s gone!

How To Play iPhone 4 FaceTime On 3G Network?

The new iPhone 4 comes with a video calling service called FaceTime. But as most Apple customers may already know, this service works only over the Wi-Fi networks and does not work over the carrier’s 3G service. That’s pretty sad since you cannot liberally video chat on the move since your movement may have to be restricted inside the Wi-Fi coverage areas.

Now, if you are desperately looking for a solution, I would suggest alternate video chat apps like Fring. But if you do not mind jailbreaking your iPhone to get things done, here is an easier option. Cydia app My3G has now released an updated version of their iPhone application that works over the newly launched iPhone 4. The application is available at a price of $3.99 – a small price to pay to enable FaceTime on 3G.

But please do note the risks involved in jailbreaking your iPhone. If you are scared of voiding your warranty or slowing your iOS, then probably it’s a good idea to not jailbreak your iDevice.

Browse The Best Web Apps For iPhone With OpenAppMkt

Native iPhone apps that you can access from the App Store have without doubt revolutionized the smartphone segment. However, though there are close to 250,000 iPhone apps on the App Store today,a lot of apps do not make it to the store because Apple’s fickle app review policies. No doubt then that a significant number of such app developers either move underground to the Cydia store or make alternate web apps for legitimate access from the iPhone.

OpenAppMkt is one such app store that exclusively showcases web apps. The store launched late last week and presently contains a good number of applications that can be accessed via the Mobile Safari web browser on the iPhone. Installing the OpenAppMkt store to your iPhone is not exactly hard – just open the website OpenAppMkt.com on your iPhone and bookmark it to your Home Screen. All web apps opened from here will open in full screen mode thus making it similar to a native app user experience.

There are not too many apps available at present. But with apps including Google Voice present on OpenAppMkt, expect a good number of users to rush in here pretty soon.

“How To Pronounce” iPhone App – Forvo Guide Launches

If you are someone who is perennially unsure of how the different words are pronounced, you may have already used Forvo sometime in the past. I have – so many times. And liked it too.

So, I was happy to see the service launch on the Apple App Store. Unlike the website, the iPhone app currently serves only the English language and enlists around 60,000 pronunciations – those generated by people like you and me from around the world. But the developers have insisted that the rest of the languages (20 and counting) shall be incorporated to the application pretty soon.

Forvo How to pronounce iPhone application

The app is free to download and is a great utility to save yourself from embarrassment while speaking with your colleagues or business partners  - by assorting the way different words are pronounced by people from all parts of the world. The app does not allow users to upload their own pronunciations. I hope this feature is added soon.

Forvo is free to download from the App Store [iTunes Link]. Do check it out and let me know your experience.

iPhone App For Work-At-Home Doctors To Help Emergencies

Japanese researchers at the Jikei University hospital have come up with an innovative solution to help patients looking for emergency treatment – an iPhone app. The iPhone app is designed to help doctors diagnose stroke symptoms from their homes without having to travel to their hospital which could otherwise cost precious minutes.

Additionally, the system is also built to send CT scan images of brain aneurysm patients to doctors so that they may take quick decisions with respect to the necessary surgery procedures. With high resolution displays and the pinch-to-zoom functionality helping doctors to efficiently study the images, the app can be of great help.

The software was developed by the hospital’s Dr. Hiroyuki Takao and is expected to be made available in other hospitals with the help of the organization’s commercialization partner, Fujifilm.

iPhone App For Medical Procedures

Prominent publisher of scientific and medical studies, Elsevier, has announced the launch of a new smartphone mobile application that will allow surgeons and other medical practitioners to have a “quick review” before conducting a procedure . The application is especially aimed at those clinicians “who may not have studied or conducted a procedure for a period of time the ability to prepare for, perform and follow-up on the most common procedures required in today’s hospital setting.

That sounds ominous from a patient’s perspective. But if medical practitioners indeed require an iPhone app to revise their medical procedure lessons, at least there is something available. The Procedures Consult iPhone app is now available on the App Store at a purchase price of $39.99. Alternatively, users may also access all of this content from the smartphone’s mobile web browser. The application comes with text, illustrations and videos that is expected to be of great help.

Digital Audio Books For iPhone/iPod Touch Using Audible

Audible – one of the largest and most popular digital audio books company has announced that their iPhone app is now available for download from the Apple App Store. The app is available for free though users will need to pay for access to several audio books.

The Audible iPhone app has a few disadvantages. But here are the benefits first. Audible claims a possession of over 75,000 titles. Also, while you may need a Wi-Fi connection to download titles that are over 20MB in size, you must note that this is a restriction that is put on most of the other apps as well. Audiobook Playback has been reviewed by users to be very crisp and clear. The app is also compatible with iOS multitasking, OS playback controls (so you can navigate using clickers on a compatible set of headphones) and a really useful bookmark system. Interestingly, Audible Playback also works with other audio books downloaded from iTunes.

So what are the negatives? The biggest gripe is that users will have to navigate to the website using Mobile Safari while making any purchase. While this is cumbersome, you may want to blame Apple for it since the company charges pretty heavily for in-app purchases. So it is evident that Audible has taken the browser route so as to not pay a hefty commission to Apple.

You can download the app by clicking here. Let us know how you find the app in the comments below.

iPhone App To Turn iPhone Into A Universal Remote

Looking for that one device that will let you control all the devices in your home? Universal remote controllers have traditionally cost over $100. But if you are looking for a cheaper alternative, the $10 iPhone app named ‘My TV‘ may help.

The MY TV application is available for free from the Apple App Store. Once done, users may pay $9.99 via the in-app purchase gateway to get an IR dongle shipped to their homes. Plug the dongle to your iPhone and you are done.

The app improves the user experience with the remote. Unlike traditional universal remotes, the device does not come with one set of buttons for all activities. Instead, users may thumb down the television guide to check out the shows on the various channels, view ratings, description, etc. Additionally, the app is also integrated with social networking features which means that users may share what they are watching with friends on Facebook.

The app currently supports only TV. But hold on since support for DVD, Blu-Ray, audio is coming soon. Gaming console support that require bluetooth may not be supported though.

NDrive GPS App Remotely Removed Using “Kill Switch”?

If you have been ardently checking out the latest in GPS technology, you may have heard of NDrive. This is a recently launched iPhone app that allowed users access to close to 1.8GB of US map data for an astonishingly low price of $2.99.

While users continue to flock to the app to get access to the treasure trove of map information,we have also been hearing that users who have already purchased the app have complained that the application appears to have mysteriously disappeared from their iDevices. Speculations are rife that Apple may have used a kill-switch to remote wipe these apps off from the users’ iDevices because it is being suspected that not all of NDrive’s 1.8GB of data is licensed.

If these rumors are true, this is the first ever time when Apple has applied the kill switch on one of the apps. However, while Cupertino continues to stay mum on this issue, few people point out that their copies of NDrive continue to stay on their iPhones. It is not entirely clear how some users alone managed to lose their copies.

Meanwhile, NDrive has issued the following statement.

“It has recently come to our attention that customers are experiencing difficulties with our iPhone navigation applications. Accordingly, NDrive acknowledges that our software listed in the Apple iTunes Store have been dissolved until further notice. We are currently working to address and improve the situation in an efficient manner. This issue has been assigned a maximum urgency level as we cannot inquire on the duration of our void from said markets. We are attentively listening and working hard to address all inquisitions submitted.”
