How To Play DVD On iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad

Everyone understands that DRM and copyrights are to be protected and adhered to. But every now and then, there arises a case when you already have purchased a movie in a particular format that wouldn’t play in another format. Converting them to another format may be illegal in some countries and I wouldn’t advocate users in these countries to follow these steps. Others may check the steps below.

Apple’s iPod Touch (or iPhone and iPad for that matter) obviously do not contain a DVD drive nor do they support the format. So, the basic job involves converting the media to an iPad compatible format and transferring them to your iDevice via iTunes to start playing the video files.

Step 1 : You will first need the appropriate software. HandBrake is an open source platform that works across multiple platforms. Perian is another that works on Mac.  Alternately, you may just search for DVD Ripper software on Google and may come across other alternatives for your platform

Step 2 : Once you have installed the software on your system, insert the DVD into the drive

Step 3 : Launch HandBrake (or any of the alternatives). Click on ‘Source’ to select the source file from your hard drive. You may also be asked for the destination folder and format depending on the software you are using.

Play DVD On iPad iPod touch iPhone

Step 4 : Once done, click on ‘Start‘ (or ‘Rip‘). There are other options to choose from, but you may not bother. This process may take a few minutes and will consume a lot of system resources. If need be, close other open applications for the process to continue.

Step 5 : Once converted, close the application and launch iTunes

Step 6 : Connect iPad or iPod Touch to your computer and transfer the converted file via iTunes.

You are done. You may now watch the movie from your favorite iDevice.

How To Remove Sidebar In Google Search

Earlier this week, Google rolled out its new search engine interface that has quite a few additions. Among the most annoying additions is the always-on left hand sidebar that offers links to Image search, News search, etc.

Hate that sidebar? Want to go back to the older interface where the sidebar was an option? Follow these steps below

Step 1 : This trick will only work on Google Chrome. Click here to download and install Google Chrome web browser.

Step 2 : On the right hand top corner of the browser, click on the ‘Spanner‘ icon. This is the tools option. Here select ‘Options

Step 3 : Under the ‘Basics‘ tab, you will find an option called ‘Default Search‘. Click on ‘Manage‘ against this text

Search engine default

Step 4 : You will find a list of search engines listed. Click on ‘Add‘ option on the right

Step 5 : In the ‘Add Search Engine‘ field, enter the following details

Name : Google Old (can be modified to text of your choice)
Keyword : google.com/ (preferred to keep it this way)
URL : {google:baseURL}search?hl=all&sourceid=chrome&ie={inputEncoding}&q=%s (do not change anything here)

Add Search Engine

Press Ok once done

Step 6 : You will now find the ‘Google Old‘ search engine listed in the list of ‘Other Search Engines‘. Click once on the text and select the ‘Make Default’ option

Step 7 : You are done. Please however note that this option will not work if you visit Google.com directly. Instead, you may directly type the search query on the Chrome address bar and the results shall be displayed on the older search interface.

Connect External Hard Drive To iPad With Camera Connection Kit

The Camera connection kit for iPad does more than its fair share of work, if you have a jailbroken iPad. You can now use it to support external hard drive on your iPad. To do this, you will need a split USB cable and an external terminal (a Mac if you choose) besides the external hard drive and camera connection kit.

Once you have them all, go ahead and watch the demo video below where Max Shay offers a good demo on how to go about connecting a portable HDD to your jailbroken iPad.

Step 3, let us know how it goes in the comments below.

How To Root HTC Desire Android Phone

Paul from Modaco has released the full guide on steps to root HTC Desire. Unsurprisingly, the rooting tutorial guide comes with several caveats with the most important one being that rooting will completely wipe your phone off and that there is no way at present to backup your device ROM. You can follow the complete tutorial here

Here is a gist of how to go about it

Step 1 : Backup your microSD card and turn it to a goldcard (A GoldCard is a special SD card which, when inserted into your device, allows you to flash RUU files with a different CID to your own device.)
Step 2 : Download a copy of ‘rooted update‘ and copy it on to your SD card
Step 3 : Turn off your HTC Desire and turn it back on by pressing the back button down. The screen will now display ‘FASTBOOT
Step 4 : Download ‘Test Ruu‘ to your computer. Connect your phone to your PC and run the file. Wait for it to complete the upgrade
Step 5 : The phone will now be turned off. Unplug it and press the volume button down to power it back on. You will see ‘HBOOT‘ displayed on the screen. Use the volume and power buttons to navigate through the options and select ‘RECOVERY‘.
Step 6 : The phone will display a Red triangle. At this point, plug your phone to a Mac OS X or Linux computer
Step 7 : Download ‘Push Files‘ and extract them to a folder on the computer. Run the ‘recovery-linux.sh‘ or ‘recovery-mac.sh‘ file as is appropriate
Step 8 : Use the optical trackball to navigate through ‘Wipe -> Wipe data /factory reset‘ then ‘Flash zip from sdcard‘. Select the rooted update and confirm.
Step 9 : The update will begin. Once the flash is complete, reboot the phone and your are done.

How To Jailbreak A Blackberry Phone?

Ok, the title of the post may be misleading but I posted it so because there seem to be a lot of Blackberry newbies who think of all the “cool stuffs” iPhone users get to do after jailbreak and so want a similar experience for their Blackberry phones like Curve, Pearl, Storm, etc.

Reality is, unlike the iPhone which is closed to third party app downloads (unless they are from the App Store and Apple stands to make a commission out of a purchase), Blackberry is already open to third party downloads. So, jailbreaking a Blackberry really does not achieve anything. So go ahead and enjoy your Blackberry without jailbreaking.

Blackberry Curve Email Problems

Here are some of the most common problems people face with sending email on Blackberry. If you do not find a solution to your email here, add it in the comments, we can sort them out.

Blackberry Curve Email Setup Problems
Sometimes it can so happen that your Blackberry does not let you to create a new email account and only offers enterprise options. This can happen if you are not on the appropriate plan. Call your operator and ask for “Blackberry Data Plan“. Also, this problem may arise if you are using your old SIM on an unlocked Blackberry Curve

If none of this is the cause and you are not able to view ‘Setup Email’ option, then switch off your Blackberry Curve, remove the battery completely, insert it back after a few minutes and switch it on. This must fix the problem. If this does not help, login to your Blackberry Internet Service from your provider’s website and setup email from there.

Blackberry Curve Emails Not Coming Through
There are two reasons why this is happening. First thing you need to check is if your inbox is full. If this does not seem to be having any issue, then your login credentials might have changed. Login to Blackberry Internet Service from your provider’s website and confirm if all your credentials are up to date.

Comment back if you have other issues
