Ever since Micromax and their ilk revolutionized the features on the lower end mobile phone segment in India, we are starting to see some really cool and trendy phones in this price bracket being released. One of the recent entrants to this segment is the new LG GW300. The phone is available at a price of Rs. 5,199. But let not the price fool you. For the price, you will get a really trendy looking handset.

The features on this phone include a good looking 2.4-inches TFT display that is packed with 320×240 pixels, a 2-megapixel camera complete with LED Flash, auto focus and 4x zooming, an internal memory of 15MB and external storage of up to 4GB. Additionally, you can also stack up more data with a microSD cards that can take your storage to up to 16GB. Other features include a full QWERTY keyboard, 900mAh battery, threaded-SMS, Email, IM and an FM player.

Overall, I would reckon that this is more than value for money and is a great purchase for 5,200 bucks.

Bangalore based Notion Ink Adam has been one of the most talked about tablet products and since their show back during CES 2010, the device has been pretty highly awaited and is seen as a gadget that can truly take on the iPad. While the device wins over its audiences on specs alone, for gadget enthusiasts in India, there was an additional sense of anticipation over the gadget since it was a ‘Made in India‘ product.

SlashGear is now out with the pricing and launch dates for Notion Ink Adam in the US and considering mandatory FCC clearances in the country, the device is not expected to launch there before November 2010 and it could be as long as January 2011 for the device to debut. The two month window is keeping in mind the fact that FCC clearances can take anywhere between 2 and 12 weeks.

But those awaiting the launch of the device in India should be disappointed to note that the company is looking to launch the device in India only after the US clearances are done and the launch happens. Quite clearly, there does not appear to be much rationale to it considering that these markets are entirely independent of each other.

If there was anyone among you who looked to get hold of a “world-class” tablet here in India before it launches elsewhere in the world, you just got your dose of disappointment.

I have become a huge fan of HTC products lately, more so with the launch of products like the EVO 4G. Another HTC product that I have been following, though it’s not quite in the same league as the EVO, is the Wildfire. I had discussed the technical specifications of this Android device a few months back – The HTC Wildfire handset is an Android 2.1 handset that is powered by features such as a 528MHz processor, a 348MB RAM and a 512MB ROM. Other features include a 3.2-inches capacitive touchscreen, a 5-megapixel camera, USB port, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The HTC Wildfire is now available on stores in India. The device is appropriately priced at Rs. 16,590 ($359). Now, if you are a Reliance subscriber, here’s something exciting. The Taiwanese manufacturer has tied up with Reliance to offer 500MB of free data per month (for six months) to all subscribers who upgrade to the new Wildfire.

Touchscreen phones are gaining currency even in the developing world and with these markets being highly sensitive to prices, Samsung has “championed” the cause of low-cost touchscreen phones in countries like India with the new Samsung Champ. The device features a 2.4-inches QVGA touchscreen display, 1.3-Megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.1, FM Radio, media player, dual speakers with 3D sound effects, 3.5 mm headset jacks and a 1000maAh battery that can offer a good 12 hours of talktime. The internal storage is just 30MB, but this can be expanded further with microSD cards.

The Samsung Champ comes in a few color variations – black, brown, white and pink. And at Rs. 4000, the price is extremely affordable to the Indian audience. That is close to $86.

The highlight of the unit is its touchscreen functionalities since I am not aware of too many touchscreen handsets at this price. That could mean Samsung is in for some serious business and expect them to sell off quite a few units at this price.

Vodafone Group Plc. (NASDAQ:VOD | LON:VOD) may be planning on selling off its minority 4.39% stake in Bharti Airtel – the India based telecom service provider who recently became the fifth largest network carrier in the world in terms of subscribers after its acquisition of Zain’s Africa operations. The value of its stake is worth to be over Rs.5,200 crore ($1.1 million).

This is not a Airtel-specific strategy. The UK based company, it is learned, has been weaning itself away from all the minority stakes that the company has been holding in several entities across the world. You may remember statements from Vodafone CEO Vittorio Colao during the Q1 announcements when he said, “We are not here to manage minorities,”.

The company early held close to 10% stake in Bharti Airtel which was diluted to less than 5% after former Vodafone CEO, Arun Sarin purchased the 67% stake held by Hutchison in India’s rival network operated by the Hutchison-Essar group.

Indian $35 Laptop Video Reveals Bill Of Materials

There has been a lot of chatter in the past day over the Indian government’s announcement of a $35 tablet device that is aimed at the student community in India. Many industry observers have been skeptical about the price and claim that the device is either going to be heavily subsidized by the government to breach the $35 price mark or this is a vaporware.

While both the options have a high probability of becoming true, there is a third possibility of this actually being true. And according to Nicolas from ARMDevices, that possibility comes from AllGo Embedded Systems – an R&D company that is based out of Bangalore, India. The company was at Orlando last month to showcase the low cost tablet PC at the FreeScale Technology Forum and according to Nicolas, this could be the very same PC that Indian HRD minister, Kapil Sibal was talking about.

If that is indeed the case, we do have the bill of materials for the device. Here is a tentative sum

ARM9 Processor: $5 (Freescale i.MX233)
Memory: $3
WiFi B/G: $4
Other discret components: $3
Battery: $5
7? 800×480 resistive touch screen: $15
Total bill of material: $35

AllGo is a private entity and is definitely going to add a margin to the costs. Even if there is no marketing cost, there is going to be additional costs incurred from manufacturing and distribution. It is likely that the government may subsidize these additional costs and considering that the prices of components may go down at a higher production rate, the device may actually end up at a price of $35 – inclusive of AllGo’s margins.

But you may note that the $35 price point is when the bulk production gets going. I have simply no clue about how the device could eventually end up at a $10 price point.

Nevertheless, if you are curious about this device, you should check out Nicolas’ video of the AllGo tablet below. Looks very very impressive for $35!

Indian Government Initiates Low Cost Tablet PC

The Indian HRD minister, Kapil Sibal has unveiled plans to launch a low cost “computing-cum-access” device – a tablet PC in other words, whose prices will begin at a modest $35. The government has indicated that with bulk production, the prices can drop to as low as $10 a piece.

Of course, the prices seem to low to be taken seriously for the moment. Rs.400 for a tablet computer looks atrociously low. Even regular sized calculators cost much more than that. Nevertheless, the ministry has indicated that the intentions are serious and it plans to make it available to students across the country. Here are the minimum functionalities that could be made available

  • Support for video web Conferencing facility
  • Multimedia content viewer for example .pdf, docx, .ods, adp, .doc, .xls, .jpeg, .gif, .png, .bmp, .odt, .zip, AVCHD, AVI, AC3, etc.
  • Searchable Pdf reader
  • Unzip tool for unzipping zip files.
  • Possibility of installing suitable firmware upgradation.
  • Computing capabilities such as Open Office , SciLab , cups (for printing support)
  • Media player capable of playing streamed as well as stored media files.
  • Internet browsing with flash plug-in, JavaScript, pdf plug-in java.
  • Wireless communication for Audio/video I/O.
  • Cloud computing option.
  • Remote device management capability.
  • Multimedia input output interface option (for allowing DTV, IPTv, DTH, streaming etc.)

Do you think this is a possibility?

Rumors are doing the rounds that Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited may be looking at acquiring a majority stake in Notion Ink – the developers of the upcoming Pixel Qi based tablet computer named Adam. The purchase will give RIL a much needed thrust to enter the tablet PC market that is being seen as a segment with high potential.

Notion Ink Adam has itself been pretty popular prior to its release. The device boasts of several interesting features that include a Pixel Qi screen, NVIDIA Tegra chip and a battery life that is said to be nearly double that of the iPad. The device is expected to launch later this year at a price of $325 that is pretty lower than the iPad’s starting price of $499.

The news may however be categorized under “rumors” for the time being. Reliance Industries has declined to comment on the speculations. Nevertheless, with a healthy level of funding already in the company’s kitty, these are interesting times for India’s own tablet computer.
